Dr. Anil K. Sood: Advancing the Future of Ovarian Cancer Research and Treatment

Cancer research continues to evolve through the work of dedicated physicians who are determined to improve treatment options and patient outcomes. Dr. Anil K. Sood, a distinguished gynecologic oncologist and cancer researcher at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, is making important contributions to the understanding and treatment of ovarian cancer.

Dr. Sood serves as a professor of Gynecologic Oncology and Cancer Biology at MD Anderson. He also holds the American Cancer Society Professorship and the Frank McGraw Memorial Chair in Cancer Research. In addition, he directs the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program and co-directs the Women’s Cancer Moon Shot Program.

A Career Dedicated to Cancer Research

Dr. Sood completed his medical training in the United States, including residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Florida and fellowship training in gynecologic oncology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Throughout his career, he has focused on understanding the biological mechanisms that allow ovarian cancer to develop, spread, and resist treatment. His research combines laboratory discoveries with clinical applications, helping move promising scientific ideas closer to potential patient treatments.

Innovative Approaches to Ovarian Cancer

One of Dr. Sood’s major research interests involves understanding the tumor microenvironment, the surrounding cells and biological conditions that influence cancer growth.

His laboratory investigates how cancer cells interact with blood vessels, immune cells, and other components of the body. These interactions can influence how tumors grow, spread, and respond to treatment.

He is also exploring RNA-based treatments, including approaches that use RNA interference to silence genes involved in cancer development. Such techniques could eventually help researchers develop more targeted treatments.

Another important area of his current work involves improving ovarian cancer surgery. A research project supported through a 2025–2030 NIH grant focuses on developing MasSpec Pen technology to help guide surgical decisions for patients with ovarian cancer. The technology is being investigated as a way to provide molecular information about tissue during surgery.

Recent Research and Recognition

In 2025, Dr. Sood co-authored research published in npj Precision Oncology examining the changing immune environment of primary and metastatic ovarian cancer. Understanding these differences may help researchers identify why cancer behaves differently when it spreads and how treatments could be better tailored to individual patients.

His contributions have earned significant professional recognition. He was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2021 and the National Academy of Inventors in 2024. He also received the Society of Gynecologic Oncology’s Innovation Award in 2024.

A Lasting Commitment to Women’s Health

Dr. Anil K. Sood’s work represents an important combination of scientific innovation, clinical research, and leadership in women’s cancer care. By investigating RNA therapeutics, tumor biology, and improved surgical technologies, he continues to help advance the possibilities of ovarian cancer treatment.

Although many of these approaches remain under investigation, his research offers promising directions for developing more precise and effective therapies in the years ahead.
